Given that I recently published my debut novel, have a second book due to my editor in mid-July, and do most of the work for my full-time PR job from home, I spend A LOT of time in the apartment I share with my husband, in front of a computer. And due to the realities of Los Angeles housing and real estate, for the past four years, most of that time was spent at our dining room table.
Recently though, we’ve been able to move things around, and I now have a dedicated room to work from! I am so grateful for this switch. Not only is it helpful for my mental health to separate my work and rest spaces within my home, but I’ve also been able to make some important adjustments to make long stretches of work more comfortable and ergonomically friendly. I also now have a fully controllable background for all of my book-related calls and podcast recordings, which honestly feels like such a win.

The furniture in this space is a mix of new items (like my desk, chair and storage locker) and older items I’ve had for years (like my trusty IKEA Billy Bookcases and Hemnes Daybed). The moment it was confirmed that I would be able to move into this room, I purchased the Duo Standing Desk from Branch.
I currently go into an office on Wednesdays for my PR job, and I was surprised by how much time I spend standing at my sit-stand desk there. It’s so nice to be able to stretch my legs throughout the day, whether simply by standing or by getting in a few extra steps on my foldable walking pad. It really helps when I need an extra burst of energy, like when I stumble into my writing room before 5 a.m. to get as much drafting or revision work done as possible before my day job, or when that post-lunch lethargy inevitably sets in.
I’ve also noticed a major difference in my overall comfort since investing in the Breck Office Chair from Haworth. Our dining room chairs are pretty comfortable, but they weren’t designed to be sat in for several hours at a time, day after day. I love that the white and “agave” colorway of my new chair doesn’t scream corporate, but instead blends in with my calm, beach-inspired motif.
The Footrocker 300 from Humanscale beneath my desk increases leg circulation while I’m sitting, and feels sooo good on my feet, ankles, calves and shins. It also keeps my knees bent at a ninety-degree angle, which is a more natural and ergonomically-friendly sitting position.
Our apartment is sorely lacking when it comes to storage, so I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to add this charming piece to my new workspace. It’s the Midi locker in the color “sage” by Mustard Made, a woman-owned brand (founded by two sisters!) out of Australia. I currently use it to store the back stock of all my favorite beverages that fuel my day. I purchased the artwork back in 2017 via Etsy; the seller’s storefront is unfortunately no longer in operation.
